Cream, Powder or Liquid Blush: Which Formula Suits You, and Where to Put It
Share
Blush used to be the step many Pakistani women skipped, mostly because of bad experiences: bright pink stripes, chalky patches or a clownish look in wedding photos.
Today blush is having a moment, and for good reason. A little colour on the cheeks makes you look healthier, younger and more awake than almost any other product.
Getting it right comes down to two choices: the right formula for your skin, and the right placement for your face.
Powder blush
The classic. Powder blush is easy to control, blends well over foundation and powder, and lasts well on oily skin.
Best for: oily and combination skin, beginners, and long days in heat.
The Miss Rose Pure Matte Blush has a pure matte finish with no shimmer, a micro-fine powder that glides on, and buildable colour from a soft flush to vivid. It comes in 12 shades.
How to apply: tap a fluffy brush into the blush, tap off the excess, and apply in small circles, then blend upwards. Always start with less.
Cream blush
Cream blush melts into the skin for a dewy, natural flush. It looks especially good on dry and mature skin, and it doesn't cling to dry patches the way powder can.
Best for: dry and normal skin, winter, and natural or no-makeup looks.
The Miss Rose Velvet Glow Creamy Blush blends easily with fingertips, a sponge or a brush, and gives a velvety glow finish that is neither flat nor greasy. It is kind to dry skin and comes in six shades.
How to apply: apply after foundation and before powder. Warm a little on your fingertip and tap it onto the cheeks.
Liquid blush
Liquid blush gives the most natural, lit-from-within flush. It is very pigmented and lasts a long time once set.
Best for: all skin types, long events, and deeper skin tones, where powders can look chalky.
The Miss Rose Stain Liquid Blush blends into the skin for a natural flush and is a good alternative to powder on deeper skin tones. One dot gives a soft tint; more gives a stronger, rosier look.
How to apply: one small dot per cheek is enough. Blend quickly with fingers or a damp sponge, because it sets fast.
Formula chooser
| Skin type | Best blush formula |
|---|---|
| Oily | Powder, or liquid set with powder |
| Combination | Powder or liquid |
| Dry | Cream or liquid |
| Mature | Cream |
| Deeper skin tones | Liquid or highly pigmented powder |
Where to put blush for your face shape
Round face
Apply blush slightly above the apples and blend diagonally up towards the temples. This adds length and lift. Avoid circles right on the apples, which make the face look rounder.
Long or oval-long face
Apply on the apples and blend outward horizontally towards the ears. This adds width and balance.
Square face
Focus on the apples and blend in soft circles to round out a strong jaw.
Heart-shaped face
Apply just below the cheekbones and blend up and back, keeping colour away from the centre of the face.
Oval face
Lucky you: almost any placement works. Try the apples blended towards the temples.
Trending placements worth trying
- Lifted blush: high on the cheekbones, blended towards the temples. Very flattering for most faces, and it gives a lifted look in photos.
- Draped blush: blush swept from the cheeks up to the temples and onto the outer brow area. Lovely for evening events.
- Across the nose: a light touch across the bridge of the nose for a sun-kissed look.
Best blush shades for desi skin
- Fair: soft pink, light peach, baby coral
- Wheatish: peach, coral, warm rose, terracotta
- Medium brown: berry, warm brick, deep coral
- Dusky and deep: plum, raspberry, deep orange, brick red
If a blush looks chalky or grey on your skin, it is too light. Go deeper and more pigmented.
Common blush mistakes
- Applying too much at once. Build it slowly.
- Putting cream blush over powder, which makes it patchy.
- Placing blush too low, which can drag the face down.
- Forgetting to blend the edges into the foundation.

Frequently asked questions
Which blush is best for oily skin?
Powder blush, or a liquid blush set with a little translucent powder. Cream blush can slide on very oily skin.
Should blush go before or after powder?
Cream and liquid blush go before powder. Powder blush goes after.
Can I layer two blush formulas?
Yes, and it is a good trick for long events. Apply a cream or liquid blush first, set it, then dust a matching powder blush on top. The colour lasts noticeably longer.
How do I fix blush that is too bright?
Buff over it with a clean brush, or press a little foundation or powder on top with a sponge to soften it.
